the deep end – February 6

2.6.2015

I was born into

a world where

fathers threw

their sons into

the deep end

to teach them

how to swim.

it is a terrible cruel

world and I can’t

always be there.

you need to learn

to survive

by yourself.

perhaps a love

born of war and

poverty and close

death, perhaps

simple meanness

bitterness passed

along.

your smile came into

my life and taught

generosity, grace,

giving. words of

the divine that I had

heard

but not known.

true light

in the darkness.

generosity – February 5

2.5.2015

generosity is the gift

she taught me

in her arms

and opened

my heart to

forever.

sandal – February 4

2.4.2015

the sandal fits

the curve of

the foot

that has rested

in it, strode

upon it,

settled

wax and fiber,

leather warm,

worn in to

comfort

by the passing

of time

and tread.

mister squirrel

2.3.2015

mister squirrel on

the window sill

the pouch of

his mouth

stuffed full

with a winter shell

saved up in barn

heaps ‘till now

when it is time

to reap the benefit

of his advanced

planning.

a front page heart – February 2

2.2.2015

picture in the paper

front page success

overnight and years

in the committing

beloved one putting

herself out there

for the sake of

her cares

on behalf of the rest

of us who listen

and appreciate

her insight

for the grand mothers

and daughters

and beloveds and

losts

that she names

with their hearts

in her hand

for command.

Gamaliel – January 29

1.29.2015

a bleak landscape

that has left behind

its faith

in the guise of

social

experiment.

no one recalls

Gamaliel’s

test

especially when

we’re failing

it.

Irish tapestry – January 28

Irish tapestry greens,

reds, deep golds,

against a forest

wall

home of our homes

before we knew

that the old country

was lost

and so started again

across the sea.

swish – January 27

1.27.2015

swish from outside

deep throw and

easy lope

across court

a young man

on the verge

of his dreams.

safe deposit – January 25

1.22.2015

ranks of steel drawers

hold secrets and

stashings

car titles, bond clips,

passports and

files

maybe some dollars

or euros for

fleeing

all behind lockings

and two keys

same name.

a picture, a doily,

laced letters,

mementoes

the sacraments of lives

past yet loved still,

always.
