nature knows – December 30

12.30

I sit beside the fire, place

names dotting cabin walls.

Gunflint, Lutsen, Rainy,

Grand Marais, up north

in deed.

Through the windows

a large coyote peered

one New Year’s morn

eyeing us and the dog

as potential.

Tonka barked and backed

knowing a predator when

he met one, while we

looked back from inside

the zoo.

His territory more than ours

even though we paid and

built in it. nature knows who

was here

first.

a writer’s prayer – December 29

12.29

let the words flow

through me.

my silent prayer.

let me get out of

the way for the

quiet inside

that sees and listens

and opens

to the more.

let those who have

ears to hear,

hear.

nine round bodies – December 28

12.28

nine round bodies

stark black on bare

branches against

a blazing blue

winter sky

cardinals, as they

turn profile, plump

against the fringe

of snow, wind and

chill.

they huddle and

keep each other

company, nestling

to one another as

in consolation.

we all nest in caves

and branches of our

device, hoping for

others to share

our desperation.

12.26

stark, clear, magical

norman rockwell in

brilliance, you greet

us.

the quiet before dawn

speaks volumes.

As a Joseph – December 24 & 25

12.25

As a Joseph I could

only watch and wait

while the miracles went

on around me.

As a Joseph I could

only hope and pray

that the One and my

love would arrive safely.

Sometimes our work is

to watch and to wonder

and give thanks

a weariness worth bearing – December 23

12.23

the fatigue of an evening

spent with friends, glasses

raised, songs sung, stories

shared.

the fatigue of lives that

care and carry on, a

weariness worth

bearing

o tannenbaum – December 22

12.22

warm lights, tree decor,

ornaments with names

of children and hopes

fulfilled.

fifteen years, long term,

anniversary, child born,

power ranger orb, etched

silver cradles.

birth of the One matching

births of our own. family

story evoked  and shared

here.

we hold hands and gaze

with wonder at what has

happened, thankful for

the now.

metallic strips stripping – December 22

12.22

metallic strips stripping

shoppers talking stalking.

panic money spending

bank protections wending.

when does the money tree

memo take a break, and

people calm the season

for some heart and Jesus’

sake.

goodies – December 20

12.20

mix sugar, flour, eggs, butter,

chocolate, drop by teaspoon

onto butter greased pan,

insert heart scan probe

and proceed.

Christmas goodies like

grandma made before

we knew about blood

vessels and blockages

and trips to the ER.

some things simply are

nourishment. for souls,

and smiles and warm

rememberings. home

fires that lend more

than heat.
