I rushed about today

doing, marking, crossing

my pencil through,

the things on

my list

 

I felt satisfaction

at first one stroke

then at another

and wrote new things

on my paper

 

so that I could cross

them off in notation

of

what-a-good-boy-

am-I.

the dog and I

walk to the end

of the drive

for morning relieving

 

over the shoulder

a blaze tan statue

stares back without

a tremble.

 

when we finish

our business and

turn back to the house

he moves.

 

trust but verify.

pumpkin orange sky

spooky light,

clear blue from the

west, while eastward

dark still hovers in

obsession.

 

we hid down in the

sauna basement

the dog tucked

into the inner

bathroom

until things rolled

through

 

and then arose

to wonder at the

sunlight at treetop.

cover the walls

borneo, papacy, fiji

and more

 

until the doctor

says pancreas

and the traveling

stops to ready

for another journey

 

where cameras don’t

come

but souls do.

charlie creeps, dandee

weeds, invasive nature

taking back its own

nettle, spotswood,

foxglove, hardened

grasses

 

to weed seems impossible

the hoe sticking with

every stroke, pulling

at muscles until the ache

screams.

 

it’s only when you get

down on all fours

level with the dirt

that progress is possible.
