the red balloon ball – July 28

a red balloon ball

has lain atop piled

stream muddle

through several

seasons now

 

a rise in rainfall

moves it a few

yards towards

the lake beyond

 

but only until wind

squalls beach it

again.

 

one day it will be

gone, moved out

onto that larger

shore

 

like all of us.

the birds know.

seven, eight, nine

swirl around

the feeder,

wait their turn,

push in to

take a stance

 

nuthatch, cardinal

woodpecker, finch

all scrambling

before the storm

 

a surprise only to

our atrophied

instincts

as wind and hail

ping the car.
