driving with the radio off – October 13

10.13

driving with the radio off.

humming of tires. subtle

varyings spray the roadside

pavement unrolls, passerbys

move distinctly. walker.

cycle. baggy in the road.

discomfort. the world out

side. going on. inner toil

to stay awkward.

to see the world present.

now, here. not there.

driving with the radio

off.

blowsy pooh days – October 12

10.12

Blowsy, blustery pooh-like

days, high limbs whipping in

the bursts, leaves fluttering

across fields where young

men turn the days of autumn

in one last battlefield for

school honors.

Pleasure. crispness. oxygen

enhanced, chlorophyll depleted

colors open up a feast of beauty

before the sparse times

come.

No matter.

this moment

is all that is needed

for appreciation.

a couple of milkbones – October 10

10.10

a couple of milkbones

and he is a goner.

nudge me this way

pull me that, only

just get me to the

guy with the bones.

doggie looks up with

those big lying eyes

feed me, feed me

they’ve been starving me

forever

before we trot home for

another round of snackrels

it’s a god’s life.

shelves – October 9

10.9

shelving goes up

to hold the stuff

that fills our life

until we can decide

that we’ve had enough

of the stuff that flits

and flies and fills

while we juggle it

until we can’t.

at which time we

will decide to

empty

the shelves.

first world problems – October 8

10.8

first world problems

come at us as if they

were the real thing.

like a child starving

in Ethiopia or a

tsunami season

the world hurts and

cries, and we sweat

the small stuff.

makes you wonder

about judgment

day.

doctor, doctor – October 7

10.7

Waiting room snoozers,

hand to mouth geezers

we each deal with the wait

according to our inner gait.

to calm, refrain, lean in, remain

the spoken word or silent sprain.

what’s your name sir? insurance

frame whir.

coming now with schedules ready

hold that gaze, keep it steady

waiting, waiting tension heavy.

call my name. I’m resigned already.

soft autumn afternoon – October 6

10.6

soft autumn afternoon,

napping before a fire

like a cat, stretched out

and dozy.

chanting fills – October 4

10.4

chanting fills the space

with echoing faith.

long born community

gathering to pray

send, care, gather

for hearts to listen.

chanting fills the huge

space with presence.

puppy love – October 3

10.3

puppy shows up to be fed

with a friend. hungry strays

telling each other where to

find a meal.

maybe Jesus-dog taught

her from that place where

canines know things they

only hint to us in wags.

her eyes say hello. it’s you.

God sent me.

black night rain – October 2

10.2

black night rain, slick

with thunder, pummels

outside my window.

I feel happy inside in

my cave, my refuge

from those riven drafts

of the world.

rain outside. me inside.

joy all around.
