what lies beyond
hitting the marks
vocation found,
living earned,
a home built,
family raised,
soul mated
we strive so long
and then
what
what comes next
not after the end
next
but within, here,
now next
when there is so
much life still
within and before
and an ending
at some unknown
time and place
but today to
be lived
each breath
and belonging
soul mated.

I gaze now in
my own life
lest I miss the light.
for my body
in advancing years
for my heart in
love’s sweet ears
for my soul in
the Blessed’s tears,
and I give thanks
for all that has grown
across
these many years.

filament of childhood
warmth against all
darkness and

I place one in my
window now
and remember
the small boy
who could not
express how afraid
and alone
he was
asking could not
the light stay on
always
not to be
snuffed away
by the season.
as if I could reach
back and across
time
to calm
his tightened breast.
