subduing nature – June 24

6.24

walking around the block again, dog

at my side, with a plastic baggie for

when he decides to let nature take

its course on someone’s lawn. We

all live in proximity that no longer

allows for nature to do natural

functions. Dogs bark and poop

thereby annoying someone or other.

What did we think when we moved to

the burbs, but that life would be perfecto

and unnatural nature would bloom

without deer or ducks or other fauna

doing anything near them that chemicals

couldn’t emasculate.

Subduing nature seems more than

biblical nowadays. More like an insatiable

beast of its own that doesn’t want to deal

with the nudgings and burpings of the

world as it is. So I bend over and pick

up the poopy puppy droppings in the

left over plastic baggie from yesterday’s

newspaper. And when nobody is looking,

I’ll empty it in the woods.

when I turn off the radio – June 23

6.23

when I turn off the radio

and watch the switch grass

blow across the yard, hiding

the pond beyond it from my sight

and watch a small squirrel move from

right to left across gaps of tree limb that

would leave me

shaking

when I stop

to listen and hear,

and feel the world as it

is without my man-made

noises, I realize what a visitor

I am, in the space I presumptuously

call

my yard.

buglet – June 20

6.20

yellow golden bullet buglet

little bomb on wheels hiding

its light under a beetle cover

which disguised as a quaint

metropolitan news reporter

is in reality

an anachronism in an age

given to Phineas T. Bluster

instead of Princess Summer-

fallwinterspring.

neither hero nor zero, but a

hot time in a cozy cover, shifter

of spirits with a shy knowing

grin.

Roman Holiday – June 19

6.19

duty over love sounds

so antique, except when it

is love of something more

than one’s own emotions.

some loves are worth the cost.

like Jesus laying it down for

the rest of us. or a soldier or

lover, taking one for the team.

how quaint. that we might have

love beyond the immediate

and in the balance find something

eternal.

night prayer – June 18

6.18

dishwasher hums in its

friendly fashion

lights dim and windows

calm

night sneaks in on soft

paws

while my soul breathes

in

and out

he’s washing the dishes – June 16

6.16

he’s washing the dishes. a

man shouldn’t do that. it’s

embarrassing. the other kid’s

dad’s don’t. it’s women’s work.

I hide my head.

I stand at the sink now years

later and see my mother’s hands

raw, cracked, hurting. he did

it for her, out of love, long before

we learned to lib.

I am embarrassed now, that I

didn’t see the strong heart in

those brute shoulders, bent

forward with the scrub brush

in his hands.

cottonwood fairy dust – June 15

6.15

cottonwood fairy dust drifts

in the air, seeds popping

exuberance onto porches,

streams burgeoning in the

late day sun.

children with noses pressed

upon life’s candy store window

suddenly noticing

the open door.

bon apetit – June 14

6.14

A late night pizza is so satisfying

greens, reds, light golds, white

cheeses, with olive oil dripping.

The olive oil makes it all healthy

I am sure. That and the glass of

red vino that beckons and softens.

All things my doctor says are good

for me, veggies and vino and a nip of

dark chocolate just to finish it fine.

In years to come science will find

that burgers and fries and malts

were the real health foods.

Woody* said that, as a prophet.

So I sit happily with another

slice and sip. Bon Apetit…

done – June 13

6.13

Sitting at the granite kitchen slab

years in the planning and now

here we sit only a step

from finished.

Like final exams and everything would

be wonderful when done. Except

life was flat. Empty. Just tiredness.

And I would get onto the subway,

my duffle on my shoulder and

make it to the Boston and Maine,

while towns flickered by dully out

the window.

It is better than that now. We

passed the finals. Straight A’s I’m sure

even on the essay tests between us.

Done just takes some adjusting.

Like mom doing the laundry, while

I go upstairs to settle in.

pique packs its punch- June 12

6.12

pique packs its punch

but only for the peeker

who dreams that his

matter

must be the only matter

that matters.
